IPCC Prepares to Launch Its New 2027 Methodology Report on Short-Lived Climate Forcers

In a significant step toward enhancing the accuracy of global emissions tracking, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recently agreed on the outline for its upcoming Methodology Report, scheduled for release in 2027. The report aims to establish standard international guidelines for inventorying anthropogenic "Short-Lived Climate Forcers" (SLCFs).
Key Highlights of the Report:

•    Targeted Pollutants: The report will provide precise methodological guidance for measuring pollutants that have a significant climate impact and are backed by robust scientific evidence. These include:
o    Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) and Carbon Monoxide (CO).
o    Non-Methane Volatile Organic Compounds (NMVOCs).
o    Sulfur Dioxide (SO₂) and Ammonia (NH₃).o    Black Carbon (BC), Organic Carbon (OC), and primary particulate matter relevant to radiative forcing.

•    Measurement Scope: The methodology will strictly focus on anthropogenic emissions (including those from managed lands). Data will be reported at the national and annual levels, using mass units for each individual species.
Important Exceptions & Notes:

•    Methane & Halogenated Gases: These will not be included in this report, as they are already addressed by existing IPCC guidelines, the Montreal Protocol, and the Kigali Amendment.

•    Hydrogen (H₂): Due to current scientific uncertainties regarding its radiative forcing, hydrogen emissions will be featured in a special appendix to serve as a foundational basis for future methodological development.
A Collaborative Global Scientific Effort:

To ensure the highest quality standards and geographical balance, over 150 international experts are currently drafting this report under the supervision of a specialized Scientific Steering Committee. The report is undergoing rigorous review through a series of intensive global meetings in Spain (March 2025), Türkiye (October 2025), and Italy (April 2026), leading up to its final release in 2027.
